Consultant chats: Talk to us about career management!

This morning we’ve been chatting in the office about career management, the changes happening across a range of government agencies, and how they might impact or interest senior-level public sector professionals.

“Why don’t we invite people to come in and have a chat with us about it?” Leigh suggested. “We work in government space, so we know what’s going on.”

It’s true. As public sector recruiters, we keep on top of the latest news in government, right across the board, although we’ve a particular interest in news that relates to employment and labour issues.

How to handle redundancy

The Government has recently announced that some of its agencies will be faced with redundancies on a large scale. For many people, redundancy can be a very stressful experience, and sometimes it’s hard to know what to do or where to turn. To help, we’ve put together some tips on how to handle redundancy. If you’re looking for more information on redundancy, check out some of the links at the end.

Job interview tips for migrants

Darryl from the Department of Labour has just dropped off our copies of Linkz Magazine, a magazine for migrants to New Zealand. We'd recommend the magazine as a great read for people who've recently arrived in the country - it's filled with migrant stories and tips about living in New Zealand - but we'd particularly recommend this issue for the contents of page 26. Yes, the article on Job Interviews is from us at The Johnson Group.

Are you right for your job? Myer-Briggs and personality in the office.

If you’ve had a poke through our site—or have had a chat to any of our consultants—you’ll know that we make a big deal about the ‘personal’ touch in recruitment. Finding the right person for the job isn’t just about matching qualifications with a job title—it’s about matching personalities, too. It’s no secret that someone who loves their work is going to be more successful at it, and will be motivated to perform above and beyond expectations.

Victoria University's Skilled Migrant Programme

Are there projects on your desk that need completing, tasks that need doing, but not enough people to do them? In these challenging economic times, do you need an extra staff member--a person with excellent skills, motivation, education and work experience?

Yes, it's that time of year again--the first intake of skilled migrants for 2009 are getting ready for their internships as part of the Skilled Migrant Programme at Victoria University. The Johnson Group has been proud to be part of the Skilled Migrant Programme for the past two years.

Tour of the Beehive - Pia and I visit New Zealand's Parliament buildings

This past Thursday, Pia and I went to Parliament for a tour organized by IPANZ. Both of us are recent migrants to New Zealand, so it was great chance to better understand some of the workings of government here.

Workforce Planning - the importance of talent management

What is workforce planning? Dr John Sullivan, an expert and thought-leader in human recruitment, describes the essence of workforce planning in his article "Workforce Planning Is Hot; Are You Lagging Behind" available on Ere.net:

Green jobs in Government - Good Magazine article

Dave Hansford has written an article on Green jobs for Good Magazine. In "Nice work (if you can get it)", Dave examines green jobs in New Zealand and employment and recruitment opportunities in these areas. Our very own Campbell (As Seen On Tv) Hepburn offered his own insights into green jobs within the public sector.

Dave has been kind enough to allow us to excerpt a section on government from the article for our blog:

Managing in a downturn

How do you manage your staff and organisation during the downturn? Most experts in the subject--business people who've lived and thrived during downturns and recessions--stress the importance of looking at future needs. Research and development, improving training, and above all openness with employees is what matters.

FutureMakers - Government policy making for the future.

Yesterday Kirsty, Melissa and I went to an IPANZ event, “Insights and questions from the FutureMakers project” with speakers Derek Gill and Stephanie Pride.

What is the FutureMakers project? Well, it’s a kind of forum or ‘conversation’ that brings together people and knowledge to look at the big opportunities, trends and challenges facing New Zealand over the next 20 years. It’s supported by the Institute of Policy Studies, Landcare Research and Secondary Futures.

Some of the key questions listed on the FutureMakers website are:
